Black Bear Portrait brings the viewer close to one of North America’s most recognizable animals, allowing expression and presence to carry the painting. I was drawn to the combination of strength and sensitivity in the bear’s face—the steady gaze, heavy structure, and subtle shifts within the dark fur. Rather than emphasizing action or habitat, I kept the composition close and direct, creating the feeling of a brief encounter at eye level. The portrait reflects what continually fascinates me about bears: their power is obvious, but it is often their awareness, curiosity, and quiet attentiveness that stay with me.
