This painting grew from one of those unforgettable encounters in Alaska. A coastal brown bear paced and charged into the water as though daring us to retreat, his presence commanding even from a distance. Just as our guide turned the boat away, he plopped down on the sandbar, nose lifted with a triumphant air—as if to say, “Ha! I won.” His boldness, wit, and sheer personality demanded to be painted, and the textured wood surface felt like the right stage for such a spirited character. He was just “happy to be there.”
