I was drawn to the bird’s elegant structure, the long sweep of the neck, and the alert stillness that seems to hold everything in suspension until the much anticipated wing flap happens. I kept the surrounding detail restrained so the heron could command the composition, allowing its shape, posture, and subtle shifts of light and color to carry the painting.
