This portrait study draws from John Singer Sargent’s Jacques Barenton (c. 1883). With its confident gaze, sailor-style attire, and loose but powerful brushwork, the piece reflects Sargent’s ability to combine immediacy with elegance.

My interpretation honors the original’s bold character while bringing a contemporary freshness to the study through a pure pigment acrylic palette. Working from Sargent’s portrait at this scale gave me direct insight into his painterly economy — the way each brushstroke carries both precision and spontaneity.

Sargent was the master. I’m humbled and grateful to study his work through the act of painting, and this piece reflects both respect for his genius and the personal joy of translating it into my own hand.
