This portrait study is based on John Singer Sargent’s Lady Agnew of Lochnaw (1892), one of his most celebrated society portraits. The composition captures the sitter’s relaxed poise, luminous lavender gown, and direct yet enigmatic gaze — hallmarks of Sargent’s genius for combining intimacy with grandeur.
My study, nearly the same size as the original, allowed me to experience Sargent’s brushwork on a scale that reveals both his bold economy and refined detail. I worked in pure pigment acrylics, translating his subtle color harmonies and confident strokes into a fresh interpretation while honoring the elegance and authority of the original.
Sargent remains unmatched in portraiture. To study and paint from his work at this scale has been both humbling and profoundly rewarding.
