Young Mockingbird grew from a small encounter at a wildlife refuge where this juvenile Northern mockingbird perched on a weathered, bare limb and had plenty to say about my presence. Though I chose to paint him in a quieter moment, with his beak closed, the attitude was still there—in the lifted posture, bright awareness, and unmistakable confidence of a young bird already finding his voice. The intimacy of the small oil painting reflects what drew me to the moment in the first place: not grandeur or drama, but the personality and presence contained in one ordinary encounter with the wild.
